Did you know Canada’s wines win International Awards?

In the wine world, the preeminent wine periodical is Decanter magazine published in the United Kingdom. Every year, they host a prestigious international wine competition, and despite the relatively small size of Canada’s wine industry on a global scale, we were well represented. In 2024, we sent 385 wines from Ontario, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia to compete.
How did we place?
– 2 Platinum Awards (97 points)
– 14 Gold Awards (95-96 points)
– 148 Silver Awards (90-94 points)
– 221 Bronze Awards (86-89 points)
– None in the lowest category “Commended”
We can never produce the sheer volume of wine that places like California, France, Italy, Spain, or Chile do, which gives them the opportunity to enter more wines in the competition. Our climate limits where we can plant vineyards, unlike some of these larger wine-producing regions. However, that does not not mean we do not produce world class wine, We do; just look at the Decanter results.
What Decanter knows is to judge a wine on its own merits; what its own terroir can deliver. We don’t make Californian, French, or Italian wine because we are Canada. And Canada produces uniquely excellent wines. Celebrate them, buy them, and be proud of what we have accomplished. We have made our mark in the wine world; we are Canadian!
