Primitivo and California’s Zinfandel are genetically identical, but where they grow makes all the difference. In southern Italy’s Puglia, Primitivo takes on a distinctly Mediterranean personality. This example is deeply coloured and generously full-bodied, with a touch of sweetness that amplifies its richness while lively acidity keeps everything fresh and balanced. The glass is filled with dark plum, blackberry and black cherry, layered with hints of cigar box, stewed cranberry, candied cherry, sage and a touch of earth. It’s bold, warming, and wonderfully expressive. At the table, it shines alongside robust fare like grilled red meats, spicy pizza, slow-braised dishes or the sweet-and-savoury flavours of caponata.
