WJ Weekend Wine: Cathedral Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon 2024

Cathedral Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 ★★★½+ (89)

One of the questions we hear most often is, “How are you doing now that California wines are no longer available?”

The answer is quite well.

It’s not that we don’t love California wines; we do. But one of the great joys of wine is discovering that there is an entire world of exceptional wine beyond California. Sometimes those discoveries become new favourites.

A perfect example is this Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa’s Western Cape.

Rich and full-bodied, it offers up black currant, blackberry, and black cherry, accented by cedar, sage, mint, and vanilla. Firm tannins give it plenty of structure, making it a natural partner for hearty barbecue fare.

If Father’s Day includes ribeye steaks, gourmet burgers, sausages, or even grilled Portobello mushroom caps, this is a bottle worth considering.  It also happens to be one of the best Cabernet values we’ve tasted lately.
